BIO:

Sydney A. Foster (b. 1994, Montgomery, AL) is a United States Air Force veteran, dedicated arts activist, visionary image maker, and accomplished director. Her creative journey is deeply rooted in her upbringing in Tuskegee, Alabama, infusing her work with the rich heritage and cultural legacy of the region. Sydney’s work is a harmonious blend of emotive storytelling, profound introspection, and a commitment to driving positive change and challenging societal norms. She aims to cultivate a culture of communal support that cherishes the wisdom of older generations alongside the fresh perspectives of the young, while also acknowledging the experiences of generations yet to be born. Her artistic endeavors are deeply grounded in Southern traditions and the global diaspora, where she collaborates with individuals whose stories amplify the voices of often marginalized and overlooked communities.

PROJECT:

“Pray the Gay Away” is an immersive exhibition that explores the lives of black queer individuals in the Black American South, focusing on Alabama. It highlights the complex intersections of gender, race, and religious identities. By centering and amplifying black southern queer voices often marginalized or suppressed, the project challenges respectability politics and aims to foster understanding and empathy.

The exhibition features vivid photography, symbolic handmade objects representing the black church, and a short film that captures real-life coming out experiences and journeys to self-discovery. These elements work together to spark vital conversations about black faith, mental health, and queer existence. The project addresses the urgent need for safe spaces and healing within Alabama’s queer community, empowering individuals to embrace their identities and narratives authentically.

“Pray the Gay Away” is more than an exhibition; it is a call to action. It invites viewers to engage deeply with the stories and experiences of black queer individuals, promoting a culture of acceptance and support. The project’s creative approach not only educates but also inspires, encouraging a broader societal shift towards inclusivity and understanding.

Through its powerful and evocative presentation, “Pray the Gay Away” underscores the importance of visibility and representation. It honors the resilience and courage of those navigating the complexities of their identities in a challenging social landscape. Ultimately, the exhibition seeks to create a dialogue that bridges divides, fostering a more compassionate and inclusive community.
