BIO:

My name is Reshonda Perryman, known as Shonda or Shon, synonymous with art. I have been creating since I could hold a pencil. Growing up in Fayette, Mississippi, the serenity of fresh air and dirt road summers nurtured my creativity. The unwavering love and support I received paved the way for my artistic journey.

I studied Graphic Design at Jackson State University and Savannah College of Art and Design, laying the groundwork for my future. Over the years, I’ve practiced graphic design through the lens of community development, education, tourism, a host of non-profits and more, always driven by my love for art and community. Seeing the impact of my art on people’s lives is what drives me—whether it’s the joy in a child’s eyes or a community’s pride in seeing their stories on a mural.

Looking ahead, I aim to use my art for empowerment and change, inspiring others to make a difference. When art and community unite, anything is possible.

PROJECT:

Mississippi’s narrative often suffers from negative perceptions, impacting community morale and resource allocation. The Smalltown Beautification Initiative aims to counter these challenges by using public art to reshape perceptions, ignite pride, and attract resources to rural towns.

Growing up in Mississippi, I’ve seen the effects of these negative narratives. Despite its rich cultural heritage, Mississippi is often overshadowed by stereotypes. This affects how the state is viewed and how residents see themselves and their potential. Consequently, Mississippi struggles to secure funding for education, infrastructure, and economic development, especially in rural areas.

The Smalltown Beautification Initiative can’t solve all these challenges but aims to catalyze change through positive storytelling and community empowerment. By creating vibrant murals, the initiative celebrates each community’s unique identity and resilience. As the leader, my goal is to engage residents in shaping the artistic vision, drawing from their stories and aspirations. Through workshops and feedback, we ensure the murals authentically reflect each town’s spirit.

These murals revitalize overlooked spaces, symbolizing community pride and resilience. They attract visitors, tourists, and potential investors, showcasing rural Mississippi’s creativity and vibrancy. This attention can lead to grants, infrastructure improvements, and support for local businesses. The initiative seeks to revitalize rural Mississippi, one town at a time.

Success depends on active community participation. By empowering residents to celebrate their unique identity, the Smalltown Beautification Initiative fosters pride, optimism, and possibility in rural Mississippi. Together, we can harness the power of art to create positive change and build a brighter future for generations to come.
