MLK Jr Day of Service – Planting Seeds of Change

Sipp Culture is welcoming all volunteers throughout our community for a day of service on Monday, January 20, 2020 to commemorate the legacy of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. at the Sipp Culture Artist Residency House. We will work to plant a substantial garden to demonstrate the self-determination paramount in King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

We believe that food + story = change. In 2014, the community grocery store in our small rural community closed. We are using food as a foundation for our community development. To that end, we are building out an edible landscape for our community house and need volunteers to help support this effort. We believe that our vision for food and its relationship to our community is part of the vision that MLK had for community self-determination.

How This Helps Our Community

This garden will support a community-centered organization that hosts artists and community events to have healthy food to share with our community and our guests. We also believe that our work helps to grow the imagination of what is possible when we think of our relationship with our community alongside our relationship with the land.
