PROJECT:

Red Sanctuary is a groundbreaking theater and immersive installation project that delves into the historical and spiritual safe spaces of Alabama’s African American Communities. The project takes its name from the symbolism of red clay and the idea of “sanctuary,” encapsulating the profound connection between the land and spiritual spaces. By fusing historical research with captivating performances, the project aims to illuminate the stories of resilience, creativity, and cultural contributions that have emerged from these communities.

Project Components

The core of the project is a traveling theater immersive installation that will set up in cities on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. Each location will feature a distinct experience that transports audience into the heart of historical events and safe spaces. These installations will also feature multimedia elements to breathe life into the historical narratives and immerse audiences in the emotions and experiences of the past and how they shape the future.
